Contract Video Journalist

Start Date: Fall 2026 Location: Fort St. John, B.C. Position Type: Contract, three to four months Reports To: Managing Editor, Energeticcity.ca Compensation: $10,000. This contract is funded through The Philanthropist Journal’s Early Career Journalism Fellowship, and the final contract value will be shared with candidates before interviews. About the Role Moose Media has partnered with The Philanthropist Journal, a national publication covering Canada’s charitable and non-profit sector, on a funded reporting series about the gaps people fall through in a rural and remote region, and about the non-profits working to catch them. Think health care access and medical travel, child care, food security, mental health supports. We are hiring one contract journalist to report and produce it. The work is three written articles, three short videos to go with them, and audio from those interviews cut into segments for This Week in the Peace, our weekly talk show. Articles run on Energeticcity.ca and in The Philanthropist Journal. Videos run across our social channels. This is a fellowship position aimed at early-career journalists. You will be paired with a paid mentor for 8 to 10 hours of one-on-one time, and you will work with editors at both outlets through pitching, sourcing, drafting, fact-checking, and copy editing. The Philanthropist Journal’s fellowship program prioritizes Black and Indigenous journalists. Key Responsibilities Pitch and develop three story ideas with editors at Moose Media and The Philanthropist Journal. Research each story, identify and build trust with sources, and conduct interviews on the record. Write three articles to publication standard for both outlets, working through several rounds of edits and fact-checking. Shoot and edit three short videos, one tied to each article, formatted for Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Pull and edit usable audio from the same interviews for This Week in the Peace. Meet regularly with the assigned mentor and come prepared to those sessions. Hit agreed deadlines, roughly one complete story package every three weeks. Travel around the Peace region for interviews and shoots. A valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle are required. Who This Fellowship is For This fellowship is designed for an early-career journalist who is Black and/or Indigenous. It exists to create a paid entry point into broadcast journalism in a region where that pathway has been hard to come by. Applicants will be asked to self-identify; no documentation is required. What We’re Looking For You’re early in your career. That could mean a recent journalism or communications grad, a freelancer building a portfolio, or someone a couple of years into a newsroom. Writing that holds together. Samples that show you can carry a story from start to finish and handle a sensitive interview with care. You can shoot and edit video on your own. Broadcast experience isn’t required, but you should know your way around a camera and an editing program. You can run your own schedule. This role comes with a lot of independence, and deadlines you’ll manage yourself. Curiosity about how services actually work on the ground — and the patience to sit with people whose situations are complicated. Familiarity with northeast B.C., or another rural and remote community, is an asset. Comfortable with everyday tools like Gmail, Google Docs, and general computer work.
