Senior Structural Engineer

Role: Senior Structural Engineer Location: Burnaby, BC Contract Duration: 2026/10/05 - 2027/10/02 Max T4 Rate: $81.08 Max INC Rate: $98.11/ Location Details The candidate must reside in the Lower Mainland in BC. Flexible work model based on business needs. Must be willing to work from the BC Hydro office 5 days a week during training and familiarization with the work and team (potentially the first 6–7 months). Role may switch to hybrid subject to the needs of the business and approval by management. The position is based out of BC Hydro’s Edmonds office in Burnaby, BC. Relocation assistance will not be provided by BC Hydro. Travel Requirements Valid Class 5 BC Driver License. Must be willing to travel, including by plane and by boat. Must have access to a personal vehicle and smartphone and be able to use them for business purposes as required. Must-Have Qualifications Minimum 8 years of structural engineering experience in Canada. Demonstrated experience in structural assessment, design, rehabilitation, and construction activity support. Demonstrated expertise in the design of reinforced concrete, structural steel, and timber structures, with a strong working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and engineering practices. Ability to serve as Professional of Record (PoR), assess field conditions, and develop practical engineering solutions to support project delivery. Working experience with construction staging, temporary works, excavation support systems, and constructability reviews. Working experience with structural analysis software such as S-Frame, SAP2000, STAAD, and common industry software. Thorough working knowledge of common industry construction practices in the Utilities Industry in British Columbia. Nice-to-Have Experience / Skills Experience working for a Canadian utility owner is an asset. Experience performing structural non-destructive testing (NDT) for reinforced concrete structures is an asset. Experience with structural concrete repair and rehabilitation is an asset. Experience with seismic retrofit of existing structures is an asset. Knowledge and experience in design related to Distribution plant including underground and overhead systems, feasibility studies, preliminary design, detailed design, and field work. Experience in structural assessment, design, rehabilitation, and construction activity support of reinforced concrete utility structures including maintenance holes, vaults, duct banks, and other underground infrastructure. Familiarity with MMCD, MoTT Utilities Manual, CoV Utilities Design Manual, and permitting requirements of Authorities Having Jurisdiction. Bridge design knowledge is considered an asset. Experience with asset structural condition assessment, risk-based prioritization, and rehabilitation planning for aging infrastructure is an asset. Experience / Skills Minimum 8 years of structural engineering experience in Canada. Collaborates well working in a multi-discipline team. Must be independent and work effectively with minimal interaction. Team player who is approachable, takes initiative, and is a proven problem solver. Strong verbal and written English communication skills with demonstrated report writing skills. Able to engage effectively with contractors and officials in a professional manner. Thorough understanding of safety in the field and environmental effects and impacts of existing conditions, construction activities, and permanent installations. Familiar with codes, design requirements, and permitting processes of Authorities Having Jurisdiction. Demonstrated understanding of EGBC professional practice requirements including quality management, document control, engineering checks and reviews, records management, and retention of engineering documentation. Intermediate MS Office skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint). Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from a recognized university in Canada. Registered P.Eng. (Civil/Structural) in good standing with EGBC. Prior to commencement, the selected candidate must have their own sole practitioner Permit to Practice or the use of their firm’s Permit to Practice with EGBC. The candidate shall work under BC Hydro’s Professional Practice Management Plan, Quality Management Pillar. The Registrant shall apply their own or their firm’s Permit to Practice Number to work that is sealed by the Registrant. Retention and preservation of all project documentation produced during the contract will be retained by BC Hydro to satisfy EGBC Bylaws. Current confined space entry training and fall arrest training (successful candidate may acquire within one month of starting with BC Hydro). PSSP 2, 3, and DBC (can be provided by BC Hydro). Additional Requirements Requires working outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to construction-related elements and may include walking steep grades and long distances occasionally. Must be comfortable using ladders, fall arrest harnesses, and other PPE during field work activities. Must be knowledgeable and comfortable using the latest remote working technologies to correspond and collaborate with project stakeholders. May require working nights or weekends occasionally based on project needs.

Perform structural assessment, design, and rehabilitation for utility infrastructure, including reinforced concrete and steel structures. Serve as the Professional of Record to develop practical engineering solutions and support construction activity.

Requires a Bachelor's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering and a P.Eng. registration with EGBC, including a Permit to Practice. Must have at least 8 years of structural engineering experience in Canada and proficiency in structural analysis software.
