The Climbing Wall 1, Monitor is a member of Cougars Athletics and Recreation, which actively creates, promotes, and sustains an environment in which the Mount Royal University community is challenged and supported in pursuit of personal growth in sport and leisure. Reporting to the Adventure Programming Supervisor, the Climbing Monitor is part of the programs and services team. The Climbing Monitor is responsible for supervising day-to-day operations in the MRU Climbing Centre. Ensuring the safety of all users while providing a memorable customer experience are required at all times in this role. The ability to effectively manage risks inherent to climbing, attention to detail, and a passion for community building are integral to success in this position. Competence in top rope and lead climbing risk management, including belay techniques with both aperture and assisted braking devices (eg, ATC & GriGri) is an asset. Responsibilities Customer Experience (45%) Greet and sign participants into the facility Conduct facility orientations and belay tests for both top rope and lead climbing Sign out rental equipment and ensure it is returned and put away Create authentic relationships with climbing participants to increase a sense of belonging and gather feedback Risk Management (45%) Present waivers, ensure accurate completion and understanding, and answer any related questions Actively supervise the Climbing Centre, ensuring policies are being followed and that all climbers and belayers are following safety best practices Provide coaching and corrective instruction on techniques as necessary Open and/or close the facility, performing regular checks and equipment storage Accessibility and Inclusion (10%) Ensure programs and services are developed and executed with accommodation for access needs Ensure people with varying abilities and circumstances feel a sense of belonging in Recreation programs and services Qualifications Preference given to current Mount Royal University students Standard First Aid & CPR-C certification. Training is available for new or expiring staff members as necessary Competence in top rope and lead climbing risk management, including belay techniques with both aperture and assisted braking devices (eg. Supervise day-to-day operations of the MRU Climbing Centre to ensure user safety and a positive customer experience. Responsibilities include conducting orientations, performing belay tests, and managing facility risk and accessibility.

Candidates should have Standard First Aid & CPR-C certification and competence in top rope and lead climbing risk management. Preference is given to current Mount Royal University students.
