Position Summary Genetics Assistant - Clinical Genetics Reporting to the Manager, Clinical Genetics and under the supervision of the Clinical Geneticists and Genetic Counsellors, the Genetic Assistant is responsible for assisting with the operations of the Genetics program including: completing paperwork for the referral triage process, obtaining missing information for current referrals, assisting with requisitions and coordinating genetic testing for patients, tracking the return of results and completing data entry in specific genetic databases and risk calculators. This position supports the hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and families. Clinical Genetics at North York General is a large regional genetics centre providing consultations in the areas of prenatal diagnosis, pediatric, adult, neurogenetics, cancer and general genetic as well as supporting inter-professional clinics for Huntington disease and hereditary breast cancer. Clinical Genetics works closely with North York General’s prenatal screening, cytogenetics and molecular laboratories On a practical level, you will Attend triage meetings with geneticist and genetic counsellor to receive direction related to next step for referrals administration or processing Follow instructions with regards to completing the paperwork for new referrals, including adding them to the electronic waitlist, sending out declined referral form letters or contacting doctor or patient to obtain missing information or records Assist with obtaining research papers and literature reviews as requested by geneticist Prepare and track family history questionnaire packages that are sent to patients Assist with providing requisitions and coordinating genetic testing for patients Track the return of patient results Complete data entry in specific genetic databases and risk calculators Qualifications Post-secondary education with 1-year related experience Bachelor of Science in Biology or Genetics from an accredited university preferred Ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team in a fast- paced environment Excellent attention to detail and accuracy Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision in an interprofessional clinical team environment Ability to understand and follow direction from clinical staff Demonstrated ability in time management and the ability to prioritize duties Demonstrated discretion when handling confidential information Excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (including Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) Experience working in an interdisciplinary team Bilingualism in French/English an asset What We Offer Working at NYGH means working with a dynamic team of fellow healthcare providers, staff, and volunteers in one of Canada’s leading hospitals.This is a Full Time Permanent position with 8 hours shifts, Days shifts in the Clinical Genetics department.
