The Manager: Animal Care is a full-time, 18-month contract on-site leadership role overseeing the Ottawa Humane Society's shelter operations. This fast-paced position requires strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining productivity. The Manager ensures compliance with SOPs and policies, makes animal care and welfare decisions, and leads a large team of animal care staff. Job Purpose The Manager: Animal Care is responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the Ottawa Humane Society (OHS) kennels and related programs. Duties and Responsibilities * Develop, implement, manage, monitor, and evaluate all aspects of kennel operations * Oversee the day-to-day operations of kennels including animal care attendant (ACA) and assistant technicians (AT) operations in kennels * Lead and manage all kennel staff: supervisors, ACAs, and ATs including orientation, training and development, and performance management * Determine short- and long-term tactics and strategies to achieve department and organizational strategic goals * Develop, implement, evaluate and ensure adherence to standard operating procedures within assigned functional areas * Develop, manage, and ensure adherence to department program budgets * Collaborate with all Operations teams and Community Services to meet organizational objectives * Manage and coordinate department resources * Be aware and make use of community resources * Develop and maintain excellent community partnerships with animal welfare organizations and OHS partners * Be thoroughly familiar with and ensure adherence to pertinent legislation, regulations, contracts, guidelines, OHS mission, policies, procedures, plans and collective agreement * Provide advice and assistance to other managers, directors, CEO, and OHS Board and committees as required * Prepare and deliver written and verbal presentations including media appearances * Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of best practices and trends in social, environmental and cultural issues relating to animal care and welfare and shelter best practices * Produce and maintain accurate reports, records, and files * Manage department administrative files and human resources documents and files * Participate in supervision, evaluation, training, and other meetings as required * Provide training, orientation and supervision for student, volunteer, and work placements as required * Hire, terminate and discipline staff in consultation with the Senior Manager: Operations and Director: People and Culture * Be familiar with and ensure compliance with all health and safety policies and procedures * Participate in the identification and evaluation of OHS program goals and objectives * Participate in professional development opportunities * Prepare and deliver written and verbal presentations including media appearances * Participate in public relations and promotional activities as required * May be required to assume some responsibilities of Senior Manager: Operations Qualifications * Post-secondary school degree or diploma in a related field * Registered Veterinary Technician designation preferred * A minimum of 3 years’ animal care management experience * A minimum of 3 years’ staff management experience * Significant knowledge and experience with animal health and welfare * Professional working proficiency in spoken and written English Working Conditions/Physical Requirements * Employee may be required to work occasional evening, weekend, and holiday shifts * Employee will be required to be on-call during specified hours on evenings and weekends * Employment is conditional upon the ability to provide services in a safe manner, including, but not limited to, lifts and transfers of large animals and interaction with potentially aggressive animals * Employment is conditional upon maintaining confidentiality of OHS information * Employment is conditional upon the ability to work around all species of animals safely How to Apply If you are interested in this opportunity and have the above qualifications, please apply via the Ottawa Humane Society Careers Centre by clicking "Apply" and following the steps.
