Safety Advisor III/ Intermediate Industrial Hygienist The Industrial Hygienist (IH) supports workplace exposure-assessment activities, evaluation of Occupational Health programs, and review of relevant regulations. This is an intermediate position whereby the successful applicant is expected to plan and execute work items with minimal supervisory support. Work activities include (but not limited to) the following: Identifies and evaluates potential chemical, physical, and biological hazards in the workplace, and recommends suitable corrective action to management where required. Updates site noise dosimetry and noise map data. Provides on-site field support during facility shutdowns/turnarounds, including evaluation of benzene/hydrocarbons, welding fumes, silica dust, toxic gases, noise, asbestos, lead, naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM), heat stress, and other potential health hazards. This is expected to require extended workdays and occasional work over weekend and/or statutory holidays. Conducts qualitative exposure assessment interviews and exposure monitoring and enters associated information into company health databases. Supports confined space job planning and execution, including review of confined space ventilation plans and advice on pre-entry gas testing and NORM testing, and field verifications of exposure control effectiveness. Serves as local site subject matter experts (SME) on exposure control technologies such as ventilation, respirators, portable gas detectors, and chemical protective clothing. Responds to employee inquiries related to chemical, physical, and biological agents encountered within the workplace, as well as to queries about product safety regulations and legislation. This includes participation in Joint Health and Safety committee meetings. Supports site regulatory compliance activities. Conducts IH-related training as an instructor. Collaborates with colleagues from the Training department to improve delivery of health-related training courses. Provides basic emergency response support under direction of company IH staff and local leadership; this may require work in off-hours. Prepares IH reports and develops/revises occupational health program documentation. Liaising with counterparts from Safety, Nursing, Emergency Preparedness, and Engineering Qualifications, Training, and Experience The successful applicant will possess either of the following combinations of education and experience: Bachelor’s degree in engineering or science with: 5+ years occupational/industrial hygiene experience, and Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH) professional designation; or Master’s degree in industrial/occupational Hygiene with 3+ years of industrial or consulting IH experience. Highly motivated, results-oriented, and strong communication skills Strong team player, yet sufficiently self-motivated to work with limited supervision once orientation is completed. Existing knowledge and hands-on skill using typical IH instrumentation such as air sampling pumps, direct-reading instruments, and noise monitoring equipment. Familiarity with submitting IH samples to laboratories (including collection of bulk samples for lead paint and potential asbestos-containing materials). Ability to wear respirators, climb stairs and ladders, and occasionally enter confined spaces. Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, Visio). Experience with IH databases and statistical programs is considered an asset. Strong business writing skills. Applicants may be asked to provide a writing sample. Have a valid Canadian driver’s license and ability to provide a suitable driver’s abstract if required. Travel requirements: This position will be based in Edmonton but travel to a company facility near Cold Lake Alberta will be frequent, approximately one week per month (typically Monday-Friday, staying in local hotels); Travel to Calgary for training and collaboration with other occupational health staff will also be frequent for the initial portion of the contract (e.g. potentially trips to Calgary monthly for onboarding for the first 3-6 months); and, Potentially other travel in Canada as defined by business need.
