Leading Practices

Project Overview The PEERS team engaged over 200 practitioners in 43 countries across seven global regions to develop an integrated understanding of (1) how coastal communities are innovating and (2) how those innovations can help practitioners and coastal communities to advance practical adaptation planning. This work is grounded in the actual needs of municipal and provincial planners to ensure that outcomes will be relevant to implementation. Outcomes include new knowledge about how coastal communities globally are addressing key challenges; identification of approaches that might benefit other coastal planning efforts; identification of additional research needs; identification of opportunities to develop durable collaborations; and recommendations for ways that local and national government entities can best support coastal adaptation planning. The project developed an integrated understanding of how innovations can help practitioners and coastal communities to advance coastal resilience planning, protect public health, and support economic development under climate change.
