Senior Software Engineer - java backend developer Location: Vancouver, Canada Duration: 12+ Months, with potential for extension Work Arrangement: Hybrid – 3 days onsite per week Hours: Standard business hours Seeking a Senior Software Engineer with strong hands-on coding, problem-solving, and system design experience to join a high-performing engineering team building scalable, cloud-ready applications. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in Java backend development, experience designing high-performance systems, and the ability to clearly explain technical decisions, architecture, and project contributions. This role is highly hands-on and offers the opportunity to work on critical, large-scale technology initiatives involving cloud migration, AI-driven solutions, and real-time decisioning. Key Responsibilities Design, develop, test, and maintain high-performance backend services using Java. Build applications using frameworks and technologies such as Spring and gRPC. Take ownership of assigned technical components and ensure solutions are production-ready. Participate in architecture and system design discussions and help drive technical decisions. Collaborate with cross-functional and engineering teams to understand requirements and deliver solutions. Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Jenkins. Work with Docker, Kubernetes, and containerized application deployments. Contribute to cloud migration and cloud-readiness initiatives. Conduct code reviews and promote engineering best practices and coding standards. Develop automated testing and deployment processes to improve reliability and efficiency. Troubleshoot complex technical issues and provide effective, scalable solutions. Mentor other engineers while remaining actively involved in coding and technical design. Required Qualifications Strong hands-on programming experience with Java. Solid knowledge of Spring Framework and gRPC. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. Experience with unit testing and mocking frameworks, such as JUnit, Mockito, or EasyMock. Strong knowledge of SQL and experience with relational databases, preferably Oracle. Experience developing and supporting high-performance applications. Strong understanding of software architecture and system design. Experience with REST API testing and automation tools such as Rest Assured. Experience with Docker and Kubernetes. Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or PCF. Exposure to front-end technologies such as Angular is a plus. Strong debugging and problem-diagnostic abilities. Excellent communication and collaboration skills. Ability to work effectively within an Agile/Scrum environment. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
