Job Description THE POSITION: Theatre Aquarius, one of Canada’s leading professional non-profit theatres, is seeking an experienced Head Scenic Artist to join our production team. Reporting to the Technical Director and Production Manager, and working closely with designers and the production department, the Head Scenic Artist is a key leadership role responsible for transforming designer concepts into compelling scenic environments. Key Responsibilities Coordinate, oversee, and execute all scenic painting for Theatre Aquarius productions, ensuring a high standard of artistic quality and craftsmanship. Interpret designs and production drawings to determine appropriate materials, techniques, and workflows for all scenic paint requirements. Manage departmental budgets and production schedules, ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget. Produce paint samples, textures, and mock-ups for designer review, ensuring the final work aligns with the artistic vision. Attend production meetings, staff meetings, department head meetings, technical rehearsals, and note sessions as required. Supervise and mentor scenic paint crews, assigning tasks and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to production standards. Address daily rehearsal and performance notes promptly, implementing changes accurately and within production timelines. Maintain compliance with all applicable Ministry of Labour health and safety regulations, Theatre Aquarius policies, and safe work practices. Qualifications Minimum five (5) years of professional scenic art experience, including supervisory responsibility. Demonstrated expertise in scenic painting techniques, materials, and shop practices. Strong skills in drawing, colour mixing, and a wide range of finishes and textures. Proven ability to manage teams, schedules, and budgets in a production environment. Strong organizational, communication, and time management skills with attention to detail. Knowledge of health and safety practices including WHMIS. Working at Heights certification. Valid Ontario G-class driver’s license.

The Head Scenic Artist oversees and executes all scenic painting for productions, transforming designer concepts into physical environments. This includes managing budgets, schedules, and supervising paint crews to ensure high artistic quality.

Candidates must have at least five years of professional scenic art experience with supervisory responsibilities. Required certifications include WHMIS, Working at Heights, and a valid Ontario G-class driver's license.
