Senior Software Developer - Lead

We are hiring a Senior Software Developer who is equally comfortable writing production code and stepping into a leadership role as the team grows. This is a hands-on position today with a clear path to shaping technical direction, mentoring others, and helping scale the engineering function over time. About the Role You will contribute directly to building and operating production systems while working closely with technical leadership, product, and business stakeholders. You will help shape how we design, build, and deliver software that powers utility-scale energy management programs. This role is ideal for someone who wants to stay deeply technical while gradually taking on more ownership, influence, and team leadership. What You’ll Do • Design, build, test, and maintain production systems across backend services, data pipelines, cloud infrastructure, and applications • Lead or contribute to technical design for new features, integrations, and customer deployments • Translate business and product requirements into clear, actionable technical plans • Work closely with a small team to break down work, review code, and unblock delivery • Mentor developers through practical guidance, code reviews, and debugging support • Collaborate cross-functionally with product, operations, and customer-facing teams • Improve system reliability, scalability, observability, and maintainability • Contribute to engineering standards, testing practices, and deployment processes • Troubleshoot complex issues across distributed systems, APIs, data pipelines, and device integrations Our Technology Environment You do not need experience with every tool in our stack, but you should be comfortable navigating modern backend, cloud, and data systems. • Backend: Node.js, TypeScript, NestJS • Frontend: Flutter mobile apps, web dashboards • APIs: GraphQL (Apollo), REST, WebSockets • Data: PostgreSQL, Redis, ClickHouse • Messaging: Kafka (event-driven architecture) • Infrastructure: Kubernetes • Protocols: OCPP (EV charging), MQTT (IoT devices) What We’re Looking For • Strong experience building and operating production software systems • Solid backend development skills with Node.js, TypeScript, or similar technologies • Experience designing APIs, services, and data models • Strong understanding of databases, performance, and data-intensive applications • Experience working in cloud-based production environments • Demonstrated ability to mentor or guide other developers • Clear communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders • Ability to translate ambiguous requirements into practical solutions • Strong debugging skills across distributed systems • A pragmatic mindset: you balance good architecture with delivering real outcomes Nice to Have • Experience with NestJS, ClickHouse, Flutter, or similar technologies • Experience with IoT systems, telemetry, or device management • Experience with time-series data or high-volume data pipelines • Background in energy, utilities, or grid-related systems • Experience with Kubernetes, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code • Experience supporting enterprise or utility-scale customers • Familiarity with security best practices in small teams • Experience helping teams mature without introducing unnecessary process The Right Fit You will thrive in this role if you: • Enjoy being hands-on in the code while influencing how systems are built • Lead through technical judgment and collaboration, not hierarchy • Communicate clearly, especially when requirements are evolving • Are comfortable in a small, fast-moving team environment • Care about building reliable systems that work in real-world conditions • Can balance speed, quality, and long-term maintainability • Are interested in energy systems, IoT, and climate-focused technology What Success Looks Like • High-quality, reliable software is delivered consistently • The team benefits from clearer technical direction and fewer blockers • Requirements are translated into well-executed technical solutions • Code quality, testing, and system reliability improve over time • Customer-facing issues are resolved with strong technical judgment
