Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Manager, Indirect Tax to lead the Canadian indirect tax function for one of the country's largest and most complex retail organizations. This leadership role oversees indirect tax compliance, advisory services, audit defense, tax technology initiatives, and business support across Canada. Reporting to the Director of Tax, this position manages two direct reports and serves as the primary subject-matter expert on Canadian indirect tax matters. The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise with a practical, business-oriented approach and enjoys partnering with cross-functional teams to solve complex operational and tax challenges. Location: Mississauga, ONRate: 115 - 120 CAD What you will work on Lead all aspects of Canadian indirect tax, including: GST/HST QST Provincial Sales Tax (PST) Retail Sales Tax (RST) Excise Tax Fuel, Environmental, and other indirect tax obligations Oversee the preparation, review, and filing of all indirect tax returns and related compliance requirements. Manage and develop a team of two indirect tax professionals, providing coaching, mentoring, and performance management. Partner with Merchandising, Supply Chain, Procurement, Finance, Legal, Real Estate, Technology, Marketing, and Operations on indirect tax matters impacting new initiatives and ongoing business activities. Provide practical tax advice on contracts, promotions, pricing, supply chain transactions, vendor arrangements, and new business initiatives. Lead federal and provincial indirect tax audits, including managing information requests, negotiating audit positions, preparing responses, and minimizing audit exposure. Research and interpret changes in Canadian indirect tax legislation and communicate business impacts to leadership. Identify opportunities to improve indirect tax processes, controls, documentation, and operational efficiencies. Partner with Finance and IT to enhance tax technology, automation, and ERP processes, including SAP and tax engine improvements. Support system implementations, acquisitions, business integrations, and process transformation initiatives. Analyze large data sets to identify tax risks, overpayments, recovery opportunities, and process improvements. Prepare technical memoranda, management presentations, and executive summaries for complex tax matters. Build strong relationships across the organization while serving as the trusted advisor for indirect tax matters. What you will bring CPA designation preferred. Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. 8+ years of progressive Canadian indirect tax experience in public accounting and/or large multinational industry. Strong technical knowledge of: GST/HST QST PST/RST Excise Tax Act Provincial indirect tax legislation Experience managing indirect tax audits with the Canada Revenue Agency and provincial tax authorities. Previous people leadership experience, including managing and developing professional staff. Experience supporting large, complex organizations with high transaction volumes. Strong SAP experience; S/4HANA experience is an asset. Experience with indirect tax engines and tax technology solutions. Advanced Excel and data analytics skills; experience with Power BI, Power Query, or similar tools is preferred. Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills. Ability to prioritize multiple initiatives in a fast-paced environment. Preferred Experience: Retail, eCommerce, consumer products, or other high-volume transaction environments. Tax automation and process improvement initiatives. ERP implementations or system upgrades. Cross-functional project leadership. Continuous improvement and process optimization.
