Job Description We are seeking a skilled Machinist (Journeyman or Apprentice) to join our manufacturing team in Edmonton, Canada. In this role, you will operate and maintain precision machinery to produce high-quality components according to detailed specifications. Operate CNC and manual machine tools (lathes, mills, grinders, and related equipment) to manufacture precision components Read and interpret technical blueprints, drawings, and specifications to ensure accurate production Measure and inspect finished parts using precision instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify conformance to tolerance standards Set up machines, select appropriate cutting tools, and adjust speeds and feeds to optimize production efficiency Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in compliance with all safety protocols and regulations Troubleshoot equipment issues and perform routine maintenance to minimize downtime Document production activities, material usage, and quality control results accurately Collaborate with team members and supervisors to meet production schedules and quality standards Continuously improve machining processes and suggest enhancements to workflow and efficiency Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and vernier calipers. Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders. Measure, examine, and test completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers. Set up, adjust, and operate all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools in order to perform precision machining operations. Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process. Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information in order to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products and determine product dimensions and tolerances. Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work. Maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. Prepare samples according to CSA, ASTM and ASME standards & customer requirements. Confer with engineering, supervisory, and manufacturing personnel in order to exchange technical information. Responsible for completion of task safety evaluations, near miss and hazard reporting as required. Qualifications Education: a certified journeyperson, holding a valid recognized credential Certification: Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Experience : Beginner - < 2 years experience Valid Journeyman Machinist certification (for Journeyman level) or active apprenticeship registration with Alberta (for Apprentice level) Proficiency in operating CNC and manual machine tools Strong ability to read and interpret technical blueprints and engineering drawings Competency with precision measurement tools and quality control instruments Knowledge of machining processes, cutting tools, and material properties Familiarity with CAD software and digital machining programs (preferred) Excellent attention to detail and commitment to producing work that meets strict tolerance standards Strong organizational and time management skills Ability to work safely and follow all workplace safety regulations and procedures Problem-solving skills and analytical mindset to troubleshoot technical issues Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team Physical capability to perform machining duties, including standing for extended periods and lifting materials Additional Information SGS is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and as such we recruit, hire, train, and promote persons in all job classifications without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression and Indigenous status, or any other characteristics protected by law.
