ABOUT SPARTAN HYDRO VAC SERVICES LTD. Spartan Hydro Vac Services Ltd. is a professionally operated hydro vacuum excavation company headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta. The Company delivers hydro vac excavation and industrial services to industrial, commercial, and municipal clients across the Edmonton metropolitan area and surrounding regions. Spartan maintains rigorous operational standards with respect to safety compliance, equipment integrity, client service, and environmental responsibility. The Company is actively expanding its field operations and is seeking qualified operators who hold themselves to the same standard. POSITION SUMMARY Spartan Hydro Vac Services Ltd. invites applications for the position of Hydro Vac Operator. Reporting to the Operations Manager and ownership, the Hydro Vac Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of hydro vacuum excavation equipment in the field. This is a skilled trade role requiring demonstrated technical competency, a strong safety record, and the professional conduct expected of a senior field representative of the Company. The successful candidate will be an experienced operator with a verifiable history of performance in hydro vac or related excavation environments, a clean driving record, and the discipline to uphold Spartan’s standards on every job site, without exception. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES The Hydro Vac Operator shall be responsible for, but not limited to, the following: – Operating hydro vacuum excavation equipment, including high-pressure water systems and vacuum systems, in a safe, efficient, and controlled manner consistent with manufacturer specifications and site requirements. – Executing hydro excavation at designated locations as directed by job orders, site plans, or supervisory instruction, including the precise exposure of underground utilities and subsurface structures. – Conducting pre-trip and post-trip inspections of all assigned equipment in accordance with Alberta Transportation requirements and Company policy, and reporting deficiencies promptly to the Operations Manager. – Coordinating effectively with the assigned Swamper and field team to ensure safe and productive job site operations at all times. – Ensuring all excavated materials are contained, transported, and disposed of in full compliance with applicable environmental regulations and Company disposal protocols. – Maintaining accurate field documentation including daily logs, disposal records, and incident reports as required. – Adhering to all applicable occupational health and safety legislation, including the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, as well as all site-specific safety requirements. – Representing Spartan Hydro Vac Services Ltd. professionally in all client-facing and public-facing interactions while on site. QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS Candidates must satisfy all of the following requirements to be considered for this position: Licensing and Driving – A valid Class 1 or Class 3 Commercial Driver’s Licence issued in the Province of Alberta is mandatory. Class 5 licences will not be accepted regardless of experience. – A minimum of five (5) years of consecutive, verifiable commercial driving experience is required. – A clean driver’s abstract is required. Submission of a current driver’s abstract will be a condition of any offer of employment. Unresolved convictions including but not limited to impaired driving or distracted driving offences will disqualify a candidate from consideration. – The successful candidate must be able to pass a drug and alcohol screening at the time of hire and must remain fit for duty in accordance with Spartan’s Drug and Alcohol Policy at all times during employment. Field Experience – Demonstrated prior experience operating hydro vacuum excavation equipment is required. Experience in directional drilling or excavation environments will be considered an asset. – Working knowledge of hydro vac equipment systems, including high-pressure water and vacuum components, equipment controls, and routine maintenance requirements. – Familiarity with underground utility environments, locate procedures, and safe excavation practices in proximity to buried infrastructure. Mandatory Certifications – Standard First Aid with CPR – current and valid certification required at time of application. – Ground Disturbance Level II – valid certification required at time of application. – Construction Safety Training System (CSTS) – valid certification required at time of application. – Confined Space Entry – valid certification required at time of application. – Fall Protection – valid certification required at time of application. Preferred Certifications – H2S Alive certification is preferred. Candidates without current H2S Alive certification may be considered provided all mandatory certifications are met and the candidate demonstrates a commitment to obtaining H2S Alive prior to or during onboarding. Professional Conduct and Attributes – A demonstrable commitment to workplace safety and a verifiable history of safe work practices in prior field employment. – Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team environment under varying site conditions. – A willingness to learn, adapt, and continuously improve operational practices in accordance with Company standards and evolving industry requirements. – Physical fitness consistent with the demands of field-based hydro vac operations, including the ability to perform manual labour in variable weather and site conditions. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT The following conditions apply to all candidates and will be assessed prior to any offer of employment being extended: – Submission of a current driver’s abstract is mandatory prior to offer. Any unresolved driving convictions may result in disqualification. – The successful candidate must successfully pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening. Ongoing fitness for duty in compliance with Spartan’s Drug and Alcohol Policy is a condition of continued employment. – Employment is subject to a ninety (90) day probationary period during which performance, safety compliance, and professional conduct will be formally evaluated. Continuation of employment beyond the probationary period is contingent upon a satisfactory review. – This position may require irregular hours, early morning starts, and occasional extended shifts depending on project and client requirements. Flexibility in scheduling is expected. – All mandatory certifications must be valid and current at the time of hire. Lapses in certification during employment must be disclosed to the Operations Manager immediately.
