Position Summary SPE is seeking a disciplined and hands-on Senior Finance Manager to lead month-end and year-end close processes across multiple entities, with an immediate focus on our Cannabis/Vape retail portfolio. Reporting to the VP of Finance, this role ensures: Timely and accurate financial close Strong operational finance processes Effective inventory and cash controls Accurate recording of M&A transactions Insightful financial reporting to support portfolio decision-making The initial mandate focuses on strengthening month-end processes, controls, and financial visibility within the Cannabis/Vape retail sector, with potential future exposure to other portfolio companies. Key Responsibilities Month-End & Year-End Close Lead full month-end and year-end close across retail entities Establish structured close timelines and deliverables Review journal entries, accruals, intercompany transactions, and reconciliations Ensure balance sheet integrity and maintain organized supporting schedules Prepare for year-end close and support tax filings Identify and resolve discrepancies proactively Mergers & Acquisitions Accounting Record and support accounting for M&A transactions Prepare purchase price allocation entries and related working papers Ensure proper recording of acquired assets, liabilities, goodwill, and adjustments Integrate newly acquired entities into the close process and control environment Inventory Control & Retail Accounting Oversee inventory accounting, reconciliation, shrinkage analysis, and adjustments Strengthen controls around inventory movements and store-level variances Monitor gross margin trends and investigate unusual fluctuations Financial Reporting, Budgeting & Forecasting Prepare and analyze management reporting packages (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow) Lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes across portfolio companies Identify process improvement opportunities and implement system enhancements Operating & Cash Management Controls Monitor operating expenses and enforce disciplined cost controls Oversee cash management processes across retail locations Maintain short-term cash forecasting and liquidity monitoring Strengthen controls around cash handling and working capital management Team Leadership & Collaboration Lead, mentor, and develop a team of finance professionals Set clear expectations for accuracy, timeliness, and accountability Collaborate with executives, portfolio company management, and external advisors Act as a trusted finance partner and business advisor Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business; CPA designation strongly preferred 8+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience Proven expertise managing full-cycle month-end close in a multi-entity environment Experience recording and supporting M&A transactions preferred Retail accounting experience; Cannabis or Vape retail experience is a strong asset Strong knowledge of inventory accounting, retail financial controls, and cash management Demonstrated experience managing and developing staff Exceptional attention to detail, analytical skills, and organizational ability Ability to operate confidently in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment Why Join SPE?
