Shop Assistant

Role: Shop Assistant Location: Nelson, BC Reports To: CNC Manager Direct Reports: N/A Role Status: Full-time, permanent FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Date of Last Review: July 2026 Role Overview The Shop Assistant supports daily shop operations by preparing materials, assisting with CNC production, maintaining an efficient workflow, and contributing to a safe and organized work environment. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in a shop, construction, manufacturing, or similar environment and is comfortable working with tools, machinery, and materials. This position offers the opportunity to further develop technical skills while contributing to the production of high-quality projects. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Prepare, organize, and stage materials for CNC processing and fabrication activities Assist CNC operators and production staff to ensure efficient workflow and timely completion of projects Safely operate a forklift to move materials, products, and equipment throughout the shop and yard Use hand tools and basic power tools to support fabrication, assembly, and general shop activities Perform accurate material measurements, cutting, and preparation tasks as required Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop and yard environment Support inventory management, including organizing materials, tools, and supplies Complete other shop-related tasks and responsibilities as required Core Competencies Innovation & Problem-Solving - applies creative thinking to solve work challenges by combining traditional methods with new approaches. Demonstrates reliability and proactive communication while seeking opportunities Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, Attributes Previous experience in a manufacturing, woodworking, construction, fabrication, or similar hands-on environment preferred Previous experience with hand and power tools preferred Experience operating a forklift is preferred, or willingness to learn Strong attention to detail and pride in quality workmanship Physically capable of handling materials and working in an active manufacturing environment Team player with a positive attitude Reliable, organized, and able to manage tasks independently Schedule and Working Conditions Ability to work 7:30-5:15, Monday – Thursday, and every second Friday from 7:30-4:00, with a 20-minute paid coffee break and a 40-minute lunch each day Ability to work on-site at Spearhead headquarters Manual dexterity to operate a variety of tools on a regular basis Ability to stand and move around the fabrication shop for work shifts Ability to work in a workshop with exposure to dust, chemicals, and noise using required PPE, as needed Ability to move and carry materials up to 30 lbs on a regular basis Compensation Pay rate is $25-$28 per hour commensurate with experience Extended Health and Dental benefits Weekly Indemnity Insurance RRSP program with employer contributions up to 5% 6% Vacation Pay Statement of Inclusion Spearhead is committed to fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Preferred experience in manufacturing, woodworking, or construction with proficiency in hand and power tools. Must be physically capable of lifting 30 lbs and working in an active shop environment.
