Department Summary St. Michael's and Providence Foundation (SMPF) is the exclusive fundraising organization that generates and manages philanthropic funds for St. Michael's Hospital and Providence Healthcare within Unity Health Toronto. Through various fundraising, income generation, and stewardship activities, SMPF, in partnership with Unity Health, will define and promote the St. Michael's and Providence brands to maximize philanthropic revenue and support their healthcare, research, teaching, and health equity initiatives. We aim to inspire our communities—local, provincial, national, and international—to invest in our organizations’ priorities, fostering innovation that equitably helps all members of society manage and overcome disease and health crises and live healthier lives, creating a more inclusive and thriving society. Join us! Position Summary This position is vital to the St. Michael's and Providence Foundation’s Marketing and Communications (Marcom) team. The candidate will be responsible for writing compelling advancement communications, marketing materials, and campaign collateral to highlight the impactful work of St. Michael's Hospital and Providence Healthcare, and to inspire donors to support our vision. Responsibilities & Activities List the key responsibilities of the position. For each responsibility, list the specific activities required to accomplish it. RESPONSIBILITY – WRITING AND RESEARCH Research and write persuasive advancement communications, focusing on major gift proposals, cases for support, campaign collateral, and impact reports. Additional responsibilities include writing articles, web and social media copy, event marketing materials, and speaking remarks, as needed. Collaborate with various stakeholders to develop content for complex, multi-stakeholder projects, such as the annual report, from concept to completion. Distill complex medical and healthcare information into clear, concise, and engaging stories that connect with donors and other stakeholders. Engage with physicians, researchers, scientists, and executives to conduct interviews on a wide range of healthcare topics. Create and share compelling stories to inspire donor support and foster loyalty. Create consistent, high-quality narratives that represent the Foundation’s brand voice across all print and digital materials. Customize content for different audiences. Ensure stakeholder feedback is incorporated, deadlines are met, and approvals are obtained. Provide copy-editing and fact-checking support to ensure accuracy and quality. RESPONSIBILITY – PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT Collaborate effectively as a team member to foster a professional work environment rooted in integrity and mutual respect. Follow the policies and procedures of St. Michael’s Hospital, Providence Healthcare, and the Foundation. Follow the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Carry out all duties as assigned to achieve the Foundation's overall goals and objectives. Operate within the organization's culture and core values. Act as an ambassador throughout the community, positively representing the Hospitals and the Foundation. Knowledge & Skills A degree in journalism, public relations, or communications is preferred. A minimum of six years of related experience. Excellent writing and storytelling skills. Ability to handle multiple priorities, manage time effectively, and stay motivated in a fast-paced and demanding environment. Ability to accurately summarize and communicate complex information. Experience in researching, fact-checking and interviewing. Strong editorial judgment and copy-editing skills. Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated reliability, flexibility and multitasking skills. Demonstrated proficiency working with standard office software. Work collaboratively and constructively with peers and stakeholders. Note: Foundation staff are occasionally required to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends. ACCOUNTABILITY/INITIATIVE INDEPENDENT DECISION MAKING Implements agreed-upon strategy for communications. Conducts extensive background research for communications collateral. Identifies opportunities to profile St. Michael's Hospital and Providence Healthcare. Ensures the final draft of all assignments has been proofread and fact-checked prior to submission. CONSULTATIVE DECISION MAKING Challenges with proposals and cases for support that are outside the regular scope. Editing and approving documents, communication materials, and stewardship reports. Sensitivity and challenges with assignments and deadlines. Challenges with reaching consensus on materials. RESPONSIBILITY FOR RESOURCES Ensuring that budget guidelines and policies are adhered to and tracked appropriately. SUPERVISORY N/A IMPACT OF ERRORS Errors in printing, invalid copy, and information inaccuracies will lead to time delays and may jeopardize the Foundation’s reputation, negatively impacting revenue and donor acquisition or loyalty. Dealing with a high degree of confidential materials and detailed information, the impact of errors or security breaches is significant and could seriously harm the image of the Foundation and directly impact donation levels.
