The Program At Taproot Community Support Services, we’re a 100 percent employee-owned organization through an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT). This Supportive Independent Living program in Edmonton, AB, encourages persons with developmental disabilities to maximize their independence, further develop their unique strengths and enjoy community integration through social, recreational and community activities. This program supports one female person served in our Semi-Independent Living Program. The person served has a mild intellectual disability, ADHD, executive functioning and memory challenges, as well as mental health diagnoses, including Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Staff play an important role in providing individualized support, helping the person served develop effective coping strategies, manage appointments and daily responsibilities, build independence, and actively participate in community activities and social opportunities. Staff also encourage personal growth, promote well-being, and support the achievement of the individual's goals. The Position The Disability Services Worker (DSW), under supervision of their supervisor, facilitates and monitors education and development programs for purposes of providing individuals in service with physical, behavioural, emotional and social supports/supervision in residence and in the community. DSWs develop relationships and act as a liaison with the community, family members, guardians and employers. The DSWs will support adults to gain independent living skills, including assistance with daily living activities including meal preparation, household chores, laundry, etc. and community access (accessing transportation to educational, recreation and community programs/events). They also, mentor and advocate for the client, and empower them to be self reliant and confident. This position reports to the Team Leader. An additional $3.30 per hour will be paid when supporting complex needs clients. This additional amount does not apply to scheduled trainings/meetings and non-complex shifts. Scheduling One (1) permanent full-time position that will work 40 hours per week: 0900-1900 on a two week rotation; Week 1= Sunday through Wednesday Week 2= Monday through Thursday In Your Role You Will Support individuals with household chores, life skills, personal hygiene (if needed). Must be willing to participate in community access activities Provide supports as per the individual's care plan Provide immediate support in crisis situations and use de-escalation techniques to deal with behaviours Administer medication, first aid if/when necessary. Use computer program to write objective daily reports and document notes & observations regarding the client A complete and detailed list of key responsibilities can be available at time of interview. Prior to confirmation of employment, all applicants must provide a copy of a current Criminal Record Check and/or Government Screening Letter. These checks vary depending on province and sector and will be communicated by the Program Hiring Team. As An Ideal Candidate You Possess MUST HAVE 2 years experience working with individuals with significant mental health concerns, aggressive behaviours and/or trauma. Ability to work well in an environment with potential for aggression/violence. Diploma or Degree – Disability Service Worker, Social Work, Special Education, Health Care Aide, Personal Support Worker or related field. MUST HAVE Valid class 5 driver license with clear driving abstract and reliable vehicle. Clear and current, National Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Check. ALSO Helpful, But Will Train If Needed First Aid/CPR Certification Crisis Prevention Intervention, Medication Administration, Abuse Protocol, Proactive Procedures and Behavioural Strategies, Foundations and Disabilities Training Knowledge of basic health and safety rules and guidelines for personal health and safety, as appropriate. Exigences
Requires a diploma or degree in Social Work, Disability Services, or a related field and at least 2 years of experience with significant mental health concerns and aggressive behaviors. Must possess a valid Class 5 driver's license, a reliable vehicle, and a clear National Criminal Record Check including a Vulnerable Sector Check.
