Job Details Temporary Full Time (CUPE 136T) Posting Status Open to all current Town of Oakville employees and external applicants. Duration 10 seasonal positions starting October 19, 2026, ending April 16, 2027. Internal secondment applications are welcome. Please note, however, that members of management will not be considered for secondments into bargaining unit positions. Temporary Rate: $32.60 Full Time Rate: $33.20 Consideration may be given to applicants who currently do not possess a DZ license if a fully qualified candidate is not available in the applicant pool. A successful applicant without the pre-requisite certification will be compensated at the Works Operations – Winter Labourer Band 1 rate of $30.05. Please Note : The position will be required to work the Winter Patrol Shift. Successful candidates may be required to work various rotating shifts including days, afternoons, midnights and weekends. Shift possibilities include the following: 6:00am – 2:30pm (8 hrs.) 2:00pm – 10:30pm (8 hrs.) 10:00pm – 6:30am (8 hrs.) Shifts and shift locations will be assigned depending on operational needs and are subject to change. This job posting is for an existing vacancy and therefore will be filled accordingly. Job Responsibilities Works Labourers are responsible for the safe operation, maintenance and service of Roads and Works equipment, and the performance of physical labour as required. Functions performed in this position are in accordance with established procedures and practices. Work is checked and reviewed as well. This Position Will Also Pick up debris and litter from roadsides, creeks, parking lots, etc. Hand dig and back fill where necessary for storm sewer, catch basin and manhole repairs and assist in the placement of pipe, manholes and catch basins Prepare ground by hand digging, raking and laying sod Collect leaves, limbs and brush; rake and clean up areas Hand shovel hot/cold asphalt; rough rake; sweep and clean up for asphalt repair Shovel snow and salt walkways as required Implement traffic control plan and act as a flag person on roadways Assist in the maintenance and seasonal conversion of equipment Operate pickup trucks, sidewalk snow clearing machines and other small equipment and tools as required Patrol roads, operate trucks, small equipment and tools as required Maintain vehicles and equipment in a clean, tidy condition, making regular inspections, reporting defects, etc. in a prescribed manner Will be required to work a fixed or rotating shift during the winter season and possibly be required to work weekend and holiday shifts. May also be assigned periods of stand-by/on-call duties for overnights, weekends and holidays Apply safety precautions and procedures in the performance of duties in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and policies of the Town of Oakville Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum of Grade 12 education or acceptable equivalent in education and experience. Previous related experience in roads and works or parks maintenance and related equipment. The successful candidate must hold and provide a copy of a valid and unrestricted Ontario Driver’s License Class DZ minimum (standard and automatic transmission) with a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behaviour. Note: Applicants with 6 or more points are ineligible for consideration. The successful applicant, who is a new hire, will be required to provide the Corporation with a current drivers abstract (no older than 30 days) and pass a Town administered road test prior to assuming the position. Must possess an understanding of the Highway Traffic Act and knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act Demonstrated mechanical aptitude, effective communication, both oral and written, customer service and problem-solving skills. Proficient time management skills and flexibility in adjusting between a variety of duties. Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team. Preference will be given to candidates having a minimum of 1 years' previous experience with machines and equipment used which includes: trucks, vans, tractors, loaders, mowing equipment, small hand equipment. Must be willing to work a 40-hour workweek in varying weather conditions and be available for shift work as required. May be required to work a rotating shift, including weekends. Candidates must have a Grade 12 education and a valid Ontario Class DZ driver's license with a clean driving record. Previous experience in roads, works, or parks maintenance and mechanical aptitude are required.
