Description The Facilities Management is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Lead Hand - General Maintenance Worker. Facilities Management, Operations & Maintenance is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and preservation of University buildings, infrastructure, and grounds across the University of Calgary campus. The General Maintenance and Grounds Maintenance units within Operations & Maintenance provide professional, efficient and cost-effective service that ensures the highest level of facility condition and supports a safe, functional environment for students, staff, faculty and visitors. Position reports to the Maintenance Supervisor and has regular contact with Housekeeping, Trades, Project Management Office[JC1.1], and other Facilities Management and campus departments. General and grounds maintenance activities are carried out on a year-round basis, with shift work and call-out as required to meet operational demand. Peak periods occur throughout the year in response to academic, event, and seasonal cycles. Work can be stressful during peak periods. The Lead Hand - General Maintenance provides day-to-day direction and coordination for general maintenance or grounds maintenance activities within the assigned area of responsibility, ensuring the highest level of facility condition and supporting occupant and customer satisfaction. The position operates within the AUPE in-scope supervision framework, providing operational leadership and acting as a link between the general[JC2.1] maintenance team and the Maintenance Supervisor. Provide day-to-day direction to general maintenance or grounds staff, including assigning and coordinating daily work and schedules, under the guidance of the Maintenance Supervisor. Assist the Maintenance Supervisor with the operations of the general maintenance or grounds maintenance division to ensure that all assigned spaces, buildings, infrastructure, and grounds areas are in proper working order, well maintained, and safe. Assist with and implement systems for monitoring the quality of services provided and ensure timeliness and efficiency of services. Monitor the quantity and quality of work performed to ensure procedures are followed according to standard and to support the achievement of departmental productivity objectives. Conduct pre-shift meetings and review all information pertinent to the day's activities. Coordinate work requests with other trades, contractors, and departments. Investigate concerns regarding general or grounds maintenance services and recommend corrective actions to the Maintenance Supervisor. Relay appropriate requests and/or concerns to the appropriate staff member or supervisor. May assist with major maintenance projects and/or assist staff during unanticipated rush periods. Skills, Mental Demands, Physical Demands, Visual Demands: Basic mathematics knowledge is necessary. Oral and written English language abilities are required. Organizational skills are required. Exercise good judgment and discernment. Service oriented and able to interface with many people is mandatory. Multitasked in an environment with many distractions is a must. Able to lift, pull, push, grasp and bend while lifting up to 50lbs. Standing: 6-8 hrs/day; sitting: 0-2 hrs/day; walking: 6-8 hrs/day; bending/reaching: 4-6 hrs/day; pushing/pulling: 0-2 hrs/day; physical effort: moderate; visual effort: moderate, detail oriented; environmental stress: moderate to high - controlled hazardous environments, confined spaces, working at heights, and year-round indoor and outdoor work conditions. Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to): Provide informal coaching and guidance to staff to support day-to-day performance and adherence to expectations. Monitor and inspect the general maintenance or grounds maintenance work performed within the assigned area of responsibility to ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety standards and regulations, accident/loss prevention programs and Standard Operating Procedures in order to achieve a high level of facility condition and customer satisfaction. Inspect on a routine basis common areas, buildings, grounds, and assigned sites, including building entrances, corridors, stairwells, washrooms, lounges, classrooms, offices, parking areas, walkways, and landscaped grounds, to ensure areas are maintained up to standards. Identify and report all maintenance deficiencies. Ensure that all storage areas, workshops, equipment yards, and tool cribs are clean, organized and properly labeled at all times. Monitor staff uniforms and PPE to ensure appropriate condition and use. Assist the Maintenance Supervisor in conducting, tracking, and monitoring inventories of supplies, materials and equipment to ensure that supplies are in circulation and available for each shift. Assist in the receiving and distributing of supplies and materials. Issue supplies/goods to staff at beginning of shift in order to control inventory and ensure proper supplies are available while controlling expenses. In conjunction with the Maintenance Supervisor, support the proper use and maintenance of general maintenance or grounds maintenance tools, equipment, and vehicles. Maintain and track communication pieces (i.e. radios, mobile devices). Respond to client and occupant requests, concerns and problems to ensure maximum customer satisfaction. Assist in implementing emergency training and procedures to ensure appropriate protection of University buildings, grounds, occupants, staff and University assets. Comply with all department policies and procedures, including working within departmental budget. Be knowledgeable of, and adhere to, all relevant operating guidelines. Update the in-house computer system (Archibus) when work orders are completed. Identify and communicate performance concerns to the Maintenance Supervisor and provide relevant documentation and input, as required, to support performance management and disciplinary processes. Assist when necessary with the full range of general maintenance or grounds maintenance duties as required to support operational needs. Assist with the development and implementation of policies and procedures for departmental operations. Keep the Maintenance Supervisor and Facility Manager promptly and fully informed of all problems or unusual matters of significance. Perform all duties and responsibilities asked in a timely and efficient manner in accordance with established University policies and procedures to achieve the overall objectives of this position. Perform special projects and other responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications / Requirements: At least a High School graduation diploma. Previous experience at a lead-hand level or equivalent operational coordination experience. Must have computer skills (including Word, Excel) and ability to learn in-house software (Archibus, work order management systems). Must have good command and understanding of the English language. Must be able to read, write and follow oral and written instructions in English. Advanced understanding of, and experience with, general maintenance or grounds maintenance tools, materials, equipment, and building or site systems is a must. Must have outstanding customer service skills. Able to handle stress in a fast-paced work environment. Able to exercise good judgment in making decisions. Able to prioritize multiple tasks, have a sense of urgency to complete projects and be detail oriented. Ability to work without direct supervision. Knowledge of scheduling to meet business needs is preferred. Strong leadership and mentorship skills. Flexible to work weekdays, weekends and statutory holidays. Must be flexible and able to work with a variety of people. Ability to work on feet for an extended period of time. A valid Class 5 driver¿s license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required). Application Deadline: August 27, 2026.
