Recreation Therapist - Long Term Care

About the Role The Recreation Aide reports to the Therapeutic Recreation Manager/ Recreation Manager or designate. This role assists in planning, implementing and evaluating activity programs to meet the holistic needs and interests of persons served, while maintaining the rights of residents and ensuring they are treated with respect and dignity. The Recreation Therapist reports to the Therapeutic Recreation Manager/ Recreation Manager or designate. This role assesses, develops and implements person centered therapeutic recreation programs to meet the holistic needs and interests of persons served. Collaborating with a variety of teams within the community to provide goal orientated outcomes. Responsibilities Include but not limited to; 1. Be an engaged collaborative team player, developing and maintaining professional relationships that support and strengthen the organizational culture and purpose. 2. Performs assessments of resident leisure functioning, strengths and limitations upon admission and as required. 3. Develops and implements recreation and leisure programs for individuals and groups according to practice based evidence and current trends. 4. Supports the completion of monthly calendars to reflect all domains and function levels to reflect resident’s needs, interests and abilities. 5. Assists and evaluates programs or protocols as required to meet person centered goals, needs and operational requirements. 6. Assists with admission and orientation of new residents and tenants. 7. Reports and documents resident progress, function and program participation. 8. Collaborates with interdisciplinary team, resident and family to prepare for pre/post resident care conferences. Attends as required. 9. Provides quarterly and annual assessments based on standards of practice and requirements of MDS-RAI and care planning timeframes. 10. Motivates and encourages resident participation through initiatives such as Resident Council to ensure resident needs and rights are being maintained and heard. 11. Assists with student and volunteer placements, orientation and evaluation when required. 12. Actively participates in orientation of new staff, community programs, meetings, committees and educational in-services. 13. Maintains a safe environment for residents, family and staff, through: * accident prevention, * knowledge of emergency procedures and regulations, * the safe use of supplies and equipment and reporting when repairs are necessary, and * Utilizing infection control procedures 14. Develops and maintains relationships and promotes Recreation Therapy with external partnerships and agencies to enhance resident programming. 15. Performs other related duties as required. Qualifications & Skills: 16. A two-year Recreation or equivalent Diploma. 17. Two year related experience in Long Term Care setting preferred. 18. Experience programming for Alzheimer Disease and related Dementia’s is an asset. 19. Member or eligibility for British Columbia Therapeutic Recreation Association (BCTRA). 20. Valid First Aid Level 1 Certificate with CPR required. 21. Serving It Right Certificate. 22. Food Safe Level 1 Certificate an asset 23. Valid Class 4 (Unrestricted) BC Driver’s License as required. 24. All successful applicants must pass the vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check applicable to Provincial guidelines. 25. Ability to push, pull, stoop, crouch, lift and carry up to 25 lbs. Must be able to work with cleaners, detergents and other cleaning equipment. 26. Ability to read, write and speak English proficiently and understand verbal and written instructions. 27. Good interpersonal and organizational skills. 28. The Recreation Therapist assesses, develops, and implements person-centered therapeutic programs to meet the holistic needs of residents. They collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and families to ensure goal-oriented outcomes and maintain a safe, engaging environment.

Candidates must hold a two-year Recreation or equivalent diploma and possess a valid First Aid certificate with CPR. Experience in long-term care and dementia programming is preferred, along with a valid Class 4 BC Driver's License.
