The Foreperson acts as the on-site leader for WesTower Wireline construction crews. This position is responsible for the daily organization, supervision, and execution of shallow utility construction projects, including HDD, trenching, and cable placement. The Foreman ensures that all work is performed safely, efficiently, and in strict accordance with design specifications and company standards. This individual is a leader who mentors crew members, enforces safety culture, and drives production targets while maintaining high-quality results. Core Competencies Safety & Quality Leadership Shallow Utility Construction Management Communication & Conflict Resolution Teamwork & Mentorship Adaptability / Flexibility Problem Solving Accountability and Dependability Attention to Detail (Redlines & As-Builts and Production Reporting) Job Responsibilities Directs the daily activities of laborers, equipment operators, and drill teams to ensure production targets are met efficiently. Leads daily toolbox meetings and FLHA (Field Level Hazard Assessment); proactively identifies site hazards and ensures all crew members adhere to safety regulations and PPE requirements. Reads and interprets construction prints/design drawings to execute cable placement, vault installation, and conduit running within shallow utility standards. Ensures that all underground infrastructure is installed at correct depths and separations, verifying that the final product meets client and municipal specifications. Applies due diligence in ensuring accuracy in promptly completing all necessary documentation, including daily production reports, red lines/as-builts, time sheets, and equipment logs. Reviews all utility locates before ground disturbance to ensure they are valid and that all crossings are exposed (daylighted) safely. Trains and mentors’ entry-level laborers and operators, fostering a culture of skill development and safety awareness. Oversee the general care and maintenance of fleet vehicles and equipment assigned to the crew, reporting mechanical issues to the Construction Manager immediately. Acts as the primary on-site point of contact for field inspectors or client representatives when the Construction Manager is not present. Requirements Valid AB Class 5 driver’s license with a clean abstract (Class 3 or willingness to obtain is an asset). Minimum 3–5 years of experience in telecommunications or shallow utility construction. Proven leadership experience with the ability to manage diverse crews and complex job sites. Valid Ground Disturbance Level II certification. Strong understanding of HDD operations, hydrovac procedures, and open trenching safety. Ability to read and interpret civil construction drawings and utility locates. Mechanically inclined problem solver who brings a strong work ethic to meeting production and safety targets every day. Physically fit and able to bend, kneel, climb, and lift (up to 75 lbs.). Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather (i.e., snow, rain, wind, etc.) if required. Work Conditions Ability to work in various environments/settings with moderate to loud noise levels. Equipped to work in excavations, trenches, and tight urban workspaces. Prepared to sit, stand, stoop, crouch, reach, and lift for long periods of time. Valid Driver’s License required for travel to various sites. Overtime and travel to locations in Western Canada, as required.
