The YWCA Cook is responsible for preparing and serving nutritious, attractive, and culturally responsive meals and snacks that meet the diverse needs of children, families, and program participants across YWCA Calgary programs. This role ensures food is prepared, stored, and served in accordance with food safety regulations, licensing requirements, dietary accommodations, and organizational standards. Working collaboratively with colleagues, the Cook contributes to a welcoming and inclusive environment by supporting meal service, maintaining a clean and organized kitchen, monitoring inventory, and ensuring high standards of food quality, safety, and customer service. This is a 37.5-hour position, Monday to Friday from 6:00am to 2:00pm. WHAT WE OFFER * Truly rewarding work; contribute to lasting, positive change for individuals and our community * A supportive team environment and opportunities for professional development * Comprehensive benefits including an employee assistance plan * Paid time off (for eligible roles; prorated based on start date) includes: * 3 weeks of paid vacation * 6 personal days * 12 sick days * A paid day off to celebrate your birthday WHAT YOU'LL DO * Prepare and cook meals and snacks according to approved menus, recipes, nutritional guidelines, and program requirements * Ensure meals are nutritionally balanced, appealing, and appropriate for the age, developmental stage, and dietary needs of participants * Childcare Menu includes an approved 4-week menu of Monday to Friday daily meals and snacks for up to 156 children across 9 rooms * Crisis Shelter Menu includes an approved 4-week menu of daily lunch and dinner for up to 80 shelter clients * Accommodate allergies, dietary restrictions, cultural preferences, and medically required food modifications * Prepare specialized meals, including texture-modified foods and purees when required * Adjust recipes and meal plans based on ingredient availability, participant needs, and operational requirements * Ensure meals are prepared and served within established timelines while maintaining quality standards * Transport, portion, and distribute food safely according to program procedures * Order food, ingredients and kitchen supplies within approved budgets and menu requirements * Receive and inspect deliveries for quality and accuracy * Monitor inventory levels and maintain adequate supplies * Maintain organized storage areas for dry goods, refrigerated items, and frozen products * Follow all Alberta Health Services food handling, storage, sanitation, and inspection requirements * Comply with applicable licensing regulations, organizational standards, and program specific requirements * Maintain strict food safety practices to prevent contamination and ensure safe meal service * Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment, work surfaces, food transport equipment, and storage areas daily * Follow established cleaning schedules and maintain accurate food safety records when required QUALIFICATIONS * Food Safety Certification (AHS‑approved) WHAT YOU'LL BRING * Additional training in child nutrition or large-scale food preparation is an asset * Experience preparing food for large groups, ideally in a childcare or institutional setting * Experience complying with health and safety regulations * Knowledge of large-scale food preparation, portioning, and safe storage practices * Ability to multitask and adapt to changing needs in a fast-moving environment If you want to change lives, we want to hear from you.
