Bell Bay Aluminium is situated on the Tamar River, approximately five kilometres from George Town and 45 kilometres from Launceston. The smelter produces around 190,000 of aluminium each year and operates 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. in 2025 Bell Bay Aluminium employed 550 FTE and total contractor hours equated to 226,566.27 (Category 1,2 and 3 contractor hours). Independent studies have found that Bell Bay Aluminium, indirectly, employs approximately 1200 Tasmanians (2022 data), and in 2022 generated economic output of $986m. The smelter creates wealth for Tasmanians through the creation of employment, export earnings, payment of government taxes and charges including energy, freight, transmission and water. In 2025 the smelter spent $262 million purchasing goods and services from 180 Tasmanian suppliers, supported 63 community organisations across Tasmania, investing $400k.
