Job Title EAL Instructors Job Type Flexible Union MRSA Salary Grade Flexible / Casual Classification (Salary Grade) SAC06 Academic Services VI (Salary Grade 22) Hybrid Work This position is ineligible Position End Date 12/25/2026 Location MRU Main Campus - Calgary, AB T3E 6K6 CA (Primary) About This Position About the Role We are currently building our pool of qualified Flexible EAL Instructors for Fall 2026 and future teaching assignments. Reporting to the Learn English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) Program Manager, the Flexible EAL Instructor provides English language instruction to domestic and international adult learners within Mount Royal University’s Learn English for Academic Purposes program. The instructor designs and delivers engaging, student-centred learning experiences aligned with established curricula, course syllabi, learning outcomes, and program standards. Drawing on expertise in adult language acquisition, the instructor uses appropriate teaching methodologies, educational technologies, and inclusive practices to support students’ academic language development, communication skills, intercultural competence, and readiness for post-secondary education. For this Fall 2026 assignment, the instructor will teach Listening and Speaking on Mondays and Fridays. Flexible instructors may also be considered for additional LEAP teaching assignments based on program enrolment and instructional needs. Responsibilities Design and deliver lesson plans aligned with course syllabi, curricular outcomes, and program expectations. Provide engaging, student-centred instruction that supports academic language development, intercultural communicative competence, and preparation for post-secondary study. Deliver in-person and/or technology-mediated instruction using appropriate teaching methodologies, educational technologies, and assigned course materials. Adapt instructional approaches, learning activities, and resources to respond to the diverse linguistic, cultural, educational, and individual needs of adult learners. Clearly communicate learning objectives, academic expectations, and relevant institutional and program policies and procedures. Provide supplemental instructional support to students during designated office hours. Develop or source copyright-compliant supplementary resources and maintain course content within the Learning Management System. Set up and manage digital tools and learning platforms required for course delivery. Contribute to the maintenance of course syllabi and instructional resources. Develop and administer formative assessments to monitor student progress and inform instructional decisions. Administer program summative assessments in accordance with established exam protocols and secure delivery practices. Evaluate student achievement of course objectives and accurately record and report grades. Collaborate with the academic team in the review of assessments. Maintain accurate attendance, assessment, and course records in accordance with program and institutional requirements. Collaborate with colleagues to support consistency and quality of program delivery. Participate in required team meetings and discussions related to student progress, teaching practices, and program delivery. Contribute to curriculum, assessment, syllabus, and instructional-material development when assigned. Perform other related duties associated with the teaching assignment. Qualifications A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. A recognized TESL Canada certification. Five or more years of experience teaching English as an Additional Language to adult learners in a post-secondary institution. Demonstrated knowledge of current English language teaching methodologies and approaches. Strong knowledge of and experience with language assessment. Experience teaching academic English across a range of proficiency levels. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of an academic team. Proficiency with learning management systems, Google Workspace, and educational technologies that support language learning. Demonstrated intercultural communicative competence and experience working effectively with culturally and linguistically diverse learners. Knowledge of inclusive teaching practices and principles of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility. Work Schedule This is a flexible, assignment-based position. For the Fall 2026 semester, the teaching assignment will be Listening and Speaking on Mondays and Fridays. Specific teaching hours and associated paid preparation, assessment, student support, and administrative hours will be confirmed as part of the assignment. Future teaching assignments may vary depending on program enrolment and operational needs.
