Position: Project Accountant Location: Ottawa, Ontario Salary: $70,000-90,000 per year based on experience, excellent RSP match and competitive benefits Position Type: Full-time, on-site Posting Type: Open vacancy Our client is seeking a detail oriented and analytical Project Accountant to oversee the financial administration of construction projects from initial budgeting through completion. This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional who enjoys working closely with project teams and wants to play a key role in monitoring project costs, billing, cash flow, forecasting, and financial performance. The successful candidate will serve as an important link between project management, field operations, vendors, and the finance team. Key Responsibilities: - Prepare and maintain project budgets, forecasts, cost estimates, and financial projections - Monitor project spending across labour, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and other project costs - Maintain accurate job cost records and ensure expenses are properly allocated - Review actual results against budgets, investigate variances, and highlight potential financial concerns - Prepare progress invoices, client billings, and construction draw documentation - Review subcontractor and supplier invoices, including holdbacks, retainage, and release requirements - Support project related accounts payable and accounts receivable activities - Monitor project cash flow and contribute to ongoing cash flow forecasting - Prepare WIP reports, financial summaries, cost reports, and other management reporting - Assist with month end and year end activities, including accruals and account reconciliations - Maintain organized financial documentation to support audits, reviews, and contractual requirements - Work closely with project managers, site teams, procurement, and corporate finance to resolve issues and support informed decision making - Ensure project financial activities are completed accurately and within applicable payment and contractual deadlines Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline - At least 4 years of accounting experience - Intimate knowledge of Ontario's Prompt Payment requirements under the Construction Act - Construction or other project accounting experience is a strong asset - CPA designation or progress toward a professional accounting designation is an asset - Experience with Yardi or other construction and accounting software is an asset - Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel - Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem solving abilities - Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy - Effective communication and interpersonal skills - Ability to manage competing priorities and work independently in a fast paced environment This role is ideal for an accounting professional who enjoys the intersection of finance and construction and wants to contribute directly to the financial success of major projects.
