Job description: Job Summary The Steel Structure Fabrication Shop Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for structural steel fabrication and miscellaneous metals projects. This role reviews contract documents, drawings, specifications, and customer requirements to determine material, labor, equipment, subcontractor, and overhead costs. The estimator works closely with project managers, detailers, purchasing, production, and clients to ensure successful project bidding and execution. Key Responsibilities Review structural and architectural drawings, specifications, and tender documents. Prepare quantity take-offs for structural steel, miscellaneous metals, stairs, railings, and custom fabricated components. Estimate material, fabrication, welding, coating, and installation costs. Solicit and evaluate quotations from suppliers and subcontractors. Prepare detailed bid proposals, cost breakdowns, and pricing summaries. Analyze project risks, schedules, and scope changes. Coordinate with engineering, detailing, purchasing, and production teams during the estimating process. Participate in bid review meetings and value engineering opportunities. Maintain estimating databases, historical cost information, and productivity rates. Assist with budgeting and project handover to operations after contract award. Review changing orders and prepare cost estimates for additional work. Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, CSA standards, and customer specifications. Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, suppliers, and contractors. Qualifications Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related field. Equivalent industry experience may be considered. 3-5+ years of estimating experience in structural steel fabrication or related construction sectors. Experience estimating commercial, industrial, or infrastructure steel projects is preferred. Technical Skills Ability to read and interpret structural steel drawings and fabrication details. Strong knowledge of structural steel fabrication processes, including: Cutting Drilling Fitting Welding Painting/Coating Galvanizing Experience with quantity take-offs and material calculations. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office. Experience with estimating software such as: Bluebeam Revu (Must) Understanding of welding procedures, fabrication tolerances, and erection sequencing. Desired Skills Excellent analytical and mathematical abilities. Strong attention to detail. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to manage multiple bids under tight deadlines. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Negotiation and supplier management skills. Ability to work independently and within a collaborative team environment. Working Conditions Office-based role within a structural steel fabrication facility. Frequent review of engineering drawings and technical documents. Occasional visits to fabrication shops and construction sites. May require overtime during busy tender periods. Preferred Certifications Gold Seal Certification (Estimating) is an asset. CWB or welding-related knowledge is an asset. PMP or construction management training is beneficial but not required. Why Join Solico Metal?
