At its core, the City values its people, embracing diverse perspectives and fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and shared success The Opportunity: The Lifeguard Instructor is responsible for the following: * Ensuring safety of aquatic patrons. * Maintaining a safe, clean and enjoyable facility. * Ensuring effective instruction of programs. This position will have specific facility related responsibilities depending on location the position is assigned (Collicutt Centre, G.H Dawe Centre, Michener Aquatic Centre or Recreation Centre) Top Key Responsibilities: * Aquatic Safety & Lifeguarding - Actively monitor patrons to ensure safety in pools and water features, Identify, prevent, and respond to unsafe behaviors, Enforce pool rules and educate patrons on safe pool use, Perform rescues and provide first aid according to established lifeguarding procedures, Maintain a safe, clean, and well‑organized pool deck and aquatic facility * Aquatic Program Instruction & Leadership - Plan, prepare, and deliver structured aquatic lessons and programs, Demonstrate strong knowledge of aquatic program content and techniques, Use appropriate teaching methods, games, and demonstrations, Communicate effectively with participants and parents, Ensure programs run on schedule and follow established standards, Create a welcoming, inclusive, and safe learning environment, Lead by example to uphold program quality and professionalism * Knowledge of Standards, Policies & Procedures - Maintain current certifications (e.g., NLS, First Aid), Understand and follow municipal, provincial, and affiliate safety standards, Stay informed on facility policies, procedures, programs, and fee structures, Participate in in‑service training and ongoing professional development, Maintain familiarity with pool equipment and facility layout * Health & Safety Compliance - Actively participate in the City’s Occupational Health & Safety program, Follow all safety procedures and emergency protocols, Complete required documentation and incident reporting, Comply with uniform and dress code standards for safety and appearance * Professionalism & Flexibility - Deliver excellent customer service with enthusiasm and professionalism, Demonstrate flexibility and teamwork, Perform additional related duties as assigned As our preferred candidate, you will have: * Grade 10 or equivalent – Minimum 15 years of age * Possession of the following current certifications – ability to renew qualifications annually or as required by supervisor * National Lifeguard Certificate - Pool Option * Intermediate First Aid/CPR Basic Rescuer (level C CPR) * Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor * Ability to exert physical effort demanded by; swimming, pulling patrons from the water, and cleaning. * Ability to handle public relations responsibilities effectively and thoroughly and to be firm and tactful in maintaining aquatic discipline and to respond calmly to emergencies. * Ability to maintain continuous alertness and attention when lifeguarding and to recognize potential problems. * Exceptional customer service skills. * Demonstrated high level of verbal, written, and listening skills. * Ability to communicate effectively with all co-workers, customers (Internal & External), and supervisors. * Ability to perform all duties in full view of the public, and maintain various guarding positions for long periods of time. * Ability to work in conditions which may be noisy and mildly unpleasant. * Ability to work shifts. * Commitment to the City’s Cornerstone Values. Affiliation: Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 417 Status: Casual Remuneration: $23.87 to $25.27 per hour. Hours of Work: Hours of work as scheduled with no minimum guarantee. The Lifeguard Instructor is responsible for ensuring the safety of aquatic patrons by monitoring pool activities and responding to emergencies. They also plan and deliver structured aquatic lessons while maintaining a clean and safe facility environment.

Candidates must be at least 15 years old and possess current National Lifeguard, First Aid/CPR, and Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor certifications. The role requires physical stamina, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work flexible shifts including weekends and evenings.
