SENIOR SPECIALIST, ENVIRONMENT Company: Tłı̨chǫ Investment Corporation Employment Type: Temporary, Full-Time Work Schedule: Two weeks on/two weeks off Location: Ekati Mine Site, Northwest Territories POSITION OVERVIEW Reporting to the Superintendent of Health, Safety, Environment, Communities and Training, the Senior Specialist, Environment is responsible for managing technical environmental work and providing technical advice and guidance. The Senior Specialist coordinates environmental personnel in the delivery of sampling and monitoring programs and supports the health and safety of personnel working at the mine site. The role also assists with data collection for regulatory reporting, works closely with other departments to coordinate operations, oversees environmental equipment and materials, and directs responses to wildlife activity. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES * Lead the development, evaluation and refinement of environmental compliance and monitoring programs in accordance with regulatory requirements. * Supervise site-based Environmental Specialists, contractors and students, including orientation, development and training. * Develop and maintain site-based work procedures, health and safety procedures, and risk assessments, including Personal Safety Cards and Job Hazard Analyses. * Manage technical consultants and oversee the development and execution of field- and office-based scopes of work. * Review technical reports prepared by consultants. * Manage and report on project schedules, deliverables and budgets, including supporting equipment-budget planning. * Support mining operations by providing technical and regulatory guidance. * Support permitting activities for new developments and changes to existing operations. * Participate in planning related to water supply and mine-waste movement. * Maintain entries in corporate risk and knowledge-management systems and support Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission reporting requirements. * Serve as the primary site-based environmental contact for operational matters, including wildlife incidents, water and waste management, and spill reporting. * Oversee environmental equipment and materials inventory, purchasing and maintenance. * Manage and actively participate in sampling and monitoring programs required under applicable licences, permits and agreements, including surveillance network, wildlife effects and aquatic effects monitoring programs. * Use ArcGIS and GPS software, including BaseCamp and MapSource, for mapping and navigation. * Oversee the safe and authorized use of firearms within the Environment Department. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE * Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Engineering degree. * Five to ten years of directly related experience, preferably within the mining industry. * Knowledge of environmental regulations, compliance monitoring and associated analytical techniques. * Supervisory experience is considered an asset. * Experience working in northern Canada and knowledge of the northern regulatory environment are considered assets. SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES The successful candidate will demonstrate: * Strong leadership, organizational and communication skills. * Sound knowledge of environmental monitoring and compliance programs. * The ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines and budgets. * Strong technical-report review and problem-solving abilities. * A collaborative approach and the ability to interact respectfully with internal departments, contractors, regulators and external organizations. * A strong commitment to workplace health, safety and environmental responsibility.
