The BMT-IEC Program seeks to identify a Physician Assistant to join our vibrant world class multidisciplinary team to provide outstanding care to our transplant patients. The Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant Program at Princess Margaret Hospital is the largest blood and bone marrow transplant program in Canada and one of the largest programs in North America. We are leaders in the field, highly active in research and development, and offer many opportunities for professional growth within the program. The PA will be based at the Princess Margaret Hospital, and function within DMOH while providing care in a multidisciplinary team setting. The PA will focus on improving equitable access to standard of care as per treatment guidelines within an inpatient setting, participate in medication adherence and monitoring optimization strategies, deliver quality patient-focused care, and evaluate and manage therapy-related symptoms. The PA will be offered training and educational opportunities both at orientation and on an ongoing basis. The PA will work in a supervised capacity with opportunity to develop more independence over time. The PA will have opportunities to participate in patient education and quality improvement. There will also be an expectation to develop their potential as a leader and teacher in DMOH. Duties Participate in the day to day management of patients in an inpatient setting and assist in the management of side effects in close collaboration with staff physicians, fellows, nurses and other support personnel. Patient assessments, investigations, symptom management, and follow up care for select high volume services within the program, for both newly diagnosed patients, and those undergoing continuing treatment. Utilize and demonstrate a theoretical knowledge and high level of clinical competence and excellence in caring for individuals with these disorders. Collect and interpret data about the health of patients, symptom management, develop a medical diagnosis and management plan – in a team environment Support outpatient clinics or new and follow-up patients. Support clinical trials enrollment by close collaboration with study coordinators including assessment of patients, AE assessment, and procedures such as BM biopsies. Prepare a cohesive summary of new referrals for the program, and triage patients under the guidance of the Head of the Allogeneic Transplant Program and team. Support the work of data managers for databases used by the program. Coordinate care of patients between PM physicians and referring physicians. Actively participate in multi-disciplinary rounds. Interested and experienced Candidates will be encouraged to provide mentorship to other physician assistants within the BMT-IEC program. Participate in policy or clinical pathway development as well as education and professional development. Interact with other team members including staff hematologists, fellows and residents, nurses, and other clinical and allied health staff both within the Program, DMOH and the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required. Qualifications Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada (PACCC) or eligible to be certified by PACCC Eligible to work in Canada/Ontario Recent clinical experience in hematology preferred but not necessary. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and with respect in an oral and written format with patients, public, colleagues and other health disciplines Demonstrated ability to perform complete and appropriate clinical assessment and development of a treatment plan in accordance with medical directives Proficient and appropriate use of diagnostic and procedural skills Demonstrated effective problem solving and critical thinking skills Demonstrated and proven ability to work in a collaborative care model with all members of the health care team Demonstrated ability to perform well in critical and high stress situations Demonstrated commitment to continuing education activities supporting ongoing professional learning Demonstrated commitment to patient safety Demonstrated ability to apply basic computer skills Willingness to work with the DMOH team to develop appropriate medical directives and evolve the role to meet the patient/program needs Additional Information Why join UHN?
