Description: Westside Recreation Centre is a world-class facility based on a lifestyle and wellness concept. Since 2000, we have been providing families with high quality and accessible recreation facilities, programs and services. This is an entry level position to lifeguarding at Westside. This position is responsible for supervision and safety in the Aquatic Park by providing customer service and delivering high quality aquatic programs. Responsibilities: * This position instructs swimming/aquatic programs to all organizational standards. * This position follows the direction of the Head Guard and is capable of providing first aid treatment when necessary. * Customer Service & Communication: * Education about policies/procedures related to bather health & safety * Aware & use various forms of communication: whistles, hand signals, body language, written, phone, radio, etc. * Safety Supervision: * Thorough scanning and supervision in assigned waterpark attendant positions * Work as a team to handle any public relation & education to prevent incidents * Respond quickly and as trained when required * Ability to recognize and safely adjust pool space being used while instructing * Follow all class management and safety policies/procedures * Keep all participants in view/active/wet during instruction * Professionalism, when on duty to be: * In full uniform * Working as part of a team * On time for rotations and lesson start * Ability to separate personal and professional relationships and environments * Shows pride in work * Facility Maintenance: * Ensure clean and safe environment for staff and patrons * Equipment in good working order & report concerns * Ability to follow safe work practices/procedures * Initiative to complete items on maintenance checklists Administrative: * Attend mandatory skills training, in-services, & meetings * Complete Incident Report Forms as required * Complete all related instructor administrative duties including; attendance, worksheets, waivers, lesson planning, report cards Risk Management: * Perform First Aid as required * Maintain cleanliness and safety of the Aquatic Park * Ensure safety of staff and patrons in Aquatic Park * Document and report to your supervisor any incidents that occur during your shift * Actively involved with workplace inspection and hazard assessments Skills Required: * Ability to work as a team member and independently * Ability to work within multi age groups * Strong customer service skills * Strong communication and problem-solving skills * Strong organizational skills Physical/Psychological Demands: * Ability to work in a fast-paced, warm, noisy and demanding environment * Ability to complete sessional aquatic skills aligned with Lifesaving Society physical standards * Ability to work with vulnerable populations and respect customer/facility confidentiality * Ability to lift 20-25lbs and work in a daily routine of sitting, standing, walking, swimming, bending, crouching, and kneeling * Extended periods of time in the pool and on pool deck * Exposure to chemical used in the pool * Exposure to cleaning supplies Qualifications: * Current Alberta Approved First Aid training agency - CSA Standard Z1210-17 Intermediate First Aid * Current Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross * Current Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor Certification * The following are considered an asset OR working towards achieving: * Current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard (Pool Option) * Current Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructor * Current Lifesaving Society Shallow Water/Ammenity Attendant Employment Term: * Part-time and year-round position
