Transit Driver - Comox

We're seeking adaptable and community-focused Transit Drivers to join our team casually, playing a vital role in keeping our community connected. Our next cohort of Transit Drivers will begin in May of 2026. Compensation, Schedule & Training: * Schedule: This is a part-time Spare Board driver position with no set hours. Shifts will be assigned based on operational needs and require strong flexibility for various shifts, including mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays. * Wage Structure (Conventional): * Full Rate (after 480 hours): $33.99 per hour. * Intermediate Rate (240-480 hours): $31.95 per hour (94% of full rate). * Introductory Rate (first 240 hours): $30.59 per hour (90% of full rate). * Wage Structure (HandyDART): * Full Rate (after training ): $31.65 per hour. * Training: Successful candidates will complete a paid training program at a rate of $27.19 per hour. * Union Affiliation: This position is part of the Unifor union. Knowledge and Experience: * A valid Class 1 or 2Q (with Air Brake endorsement) driver’s license. * Driver's abstract with no more than 5 demerit points and a demonstrated record of safe and responsible driving over the past 5 years. * Successful completion of a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSS) is required. * Preferred: At least 1 year of professional driving experience (e.g., school bus or other transport). * Significant skills dealing effectively with the public, including demonstrated skills in conflict resolution, problem solving, and sound decision-making in positions providing customer service. * Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to communicate effectively with the traveling public and to report on incidents involving safety and/or service. * No criminal convictions or pending charges relating directly to the Operator position. * Willingness to participate in a comprehensive recruitment process which consists of interviews, trainability session, medical examination (as required for licensing), drug and alcohol screening, criminal record and reference checks. Skills: * Demonstrates a high level of professionalism, including commitment, patience, maturity, initiative, organization, punctuality, and reliability. * Possesses excellent driving skills and habits, with the ability to operate vehicles safely in all weather/road conditions. * Exhibits strong communication, customer service, and conflict resolution skills, maintaining a calm, upbeat, and helpful manner. * Capable of sound decision-making and problem-solving, particularly under stressful situations. * Ability to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays. Key Accountabilities: Customer Transportation: * Safely transport passengers on assigned routes within Comox. * Transport customers in accordance with Municipal and Company policies, observing all traffic laws and safety rules and adhering to time schedules. * Courteously and professionally interact with customers. * Load mobility devices and escort customers to and from curbside as required. * Make general announcements to customers. * Collect correct fares and ensure valid passes are presented. * Manage passenger behaviour by quickly and effectively solving problems. * Drive safely and responsibly and be prepared for all road and traffic conditions. Vehicle Inspection & Maintenance: * Conduct thorough pre-trip inspections, including checking fluid levels and general vehicle condition, to ensure the bus is in safe operating order. * Report any mechanical issues or vehicle deficiencies promptly. Communication and Reporting: * Maintain radio contact with base and use proper communications protocol. * Report passenger emergencies and schedule concerns. * Complete various forms of paperwork, as required. * Assist with driver coverage by driving the transit bus. Safely transport passengers on assigned routes while adhering to traffic laws, safety rules, and established time schedules. Conduct thorough pre-trip vehicle inspections and maintain professional communication with base and passengers.

Candidates must possess a valid Class 1 or 2Q driver's license with an air brake endorsement and a clean driving abstract. Successful completion of a Vulnerable Sector Check and the ability to work flexible shifts including weekends and holidays are mandatory.
