La SOPFEU est la seule organisation au Québec responsable de la prévention, de la détection et de la suppression des incendies de forêt. Sa mission vise à protéger la forêt, les communautés et les infrastructures stratégiques contre les incendies de végétation, tout en assurant la pérennité du milieu forestier. Elle est mandatée par le ministère de la Sécurité publique (MSP) pour accomplir cette mission unique, et peut compter sur une grande équipe de plus de 650 travailleurs engagés répartis stratégiquement partout en province. Au siège social de Québec, s'ajoutent les trois directions régionales (Baie-Comeau, Roberval et Val-d’Or) ainsi que plusieurs bases d'opérations.
